An obtained access-to-information request reveals that Memorial University spent $27,490,378.72 in Marketing and Communications expenditures between 2012-13 and 2016-17. 

The university’s Division of Marketing and Communications at the St. John’s Campus accounted for $19,627,174 of the total. Annual expenditures were $4,440,873 in 2012-13, $3,632,355 in 2013-14, $3,924,840 in 2014-15, $3,794,443 in 2015-16, and $3,834,663 in 2016-17. 

Memorial noted that the St. John’s division had a pan-university scope and that its budget included funding for programs and services such as the Gazette, President’s Report, Convocation, central creative services and institutional memberships. 

On the St. John’s Campus, there were 52 people employed in 2012-13, 52 in 2013-14, 57 in 2014-15, 55 in 2015-16, and 39 in 2016-17. 

At the Marine Institute, Marketing and Communications expenditures totalled $3,315,960. Annual expenditures were $597,186 in 2012-13, $719,126 in 2013-14, $610,727 in 2014-15, $687,224 in 2015-16, and $701,697 in 2016-17. 

At the Marine Institute, there were 6 people employed in 2012-13, 7 in 2013-14, 7 in 2014-15, 7 in 2015-16, and 7 in 2016-17. 

At Grenfell Campus, Marketing and Communications expenditures totalled $4,547,244.72. Annual expenditures were $957,202.39 in 2012-13, $950,302.43 in 2013-14, $881,744.41 in 2014-15, $890,254.49 in 2015-16, and $867,741 in 2016-17. 

At Grenfell Campus, there were eight people employed in each of the five years. 

Across the three campuses, travel expenditures amounted to $344,585.36. Of the total, $247,312 was spent at St. John’s Campus, $29,930 at the Marine Institute, and $67,343.36 at Grenfell Campus.
