A recently obtained access-to-information request reveals that Memorial University’s Botanical Garden expenditures exceeded its revenue by $422,064 in 2025-26.

Total expenditures were $1,053,004, while total revenue was $630,940. 

Of the total expenditures, staff and employee benefits totalled $853,154, and operating expenditures totalled $199,850.

For salaries and employee benefits, the Botanical Garden spent $224,435 on full-time administrative positions, $364,006 on contractual administrative positions, $152,919 on employee benefits, and $111,794 on student assistants. 

For operating expenditures, the Botanical Garden spent $123,750 on material and supplies, $4,325 on equipment repairs and maintenance, $6,095 on building repairs and maintenance, $5,420 on institutional memberships, $8,290 on telecommunications, $32,150 on externally contracted services, $16,090 on debt servicing, $1,200 on operating leases, $10,950 on equipment rentals, $6,375 on travel and hosting expenses, and $14,795 on transfers. 

For revenue, the Botanical Garden generated $27,095 from the federal government, $577,750 from “other revenue,” and $26,095 from donations.
