
A recently obtained access-to-information request from the Department of Digital Government and Service NL reveals service times for lottery license applications from May 23, 2024, to March 18, 2025. 2095 applications were received, 1658 were issued, 1925 (91.9%) were closed, and 170 were outstanding (8.1%). The average wait time from the date of application received to the date the licensed was issued was 15 days.
The service time was 14 days or less for 1098 applications (66.22%), between 15 and 30 days for 381 applications (22.98%), between 31 and 60 days for 124 applications (7.48%), between 61 and 90 days for 42 applications (2.53%), between 91 and 110 days for 10 applications (0.60%), and 111 days or more for 3 applications (0.18%). The Department noted that all service times include time waiting for applications to correct deficiencies in the application submission.
Also included in the access request was email correspondence from different groups complaining about delays in lottery licences such as Brother Rice Junior High, Brenton Group, the Royal St. John’s Regatta, Basketball NL, O’Brien Farm Foundation Inc., Exploits Trailnet, Seal Cove Recreation Committee, and Belles with Balls Newfoundland and Labrador.
