Memorial University Art History Professor Gerard Curtis has criticized the university’s decision to award a contract to an American firm to develop a strategic enrolment management plan.
Records recently obtained through an access-to-information request show that Memorial University issued a purchase order totalling $228,142.75 to the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) to develop the enrolment plan.
“They have the gall, in this time of American tariff wars and a need to buy Canadian, to award a major recruitment and programme overview to an American firm over Canadian firms. You can’t make this shit up!” Curtis said.
Curtis also criticized the contract’s implications for the university’s academic governance. He said the contract effectively bypasses the Senate’s role in setting academic programming and policies in favour of a private corporate perspective, supposedly dressed up with “consultations.”
“Time for this President – and the Board of Regents – to be sacked,” said Curtis.
