The Memorial University of Newfoundland Students’ Union (MUNSU) released a statement on October 26, 2026, raising concerns about recent Metrobus service reductions and expressing support for transit workers represented by Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1462.
The release noted that Metrobus reduced service on several routes effective October 26, including those serving Memorial University. Routes 23, 11, 9, 18, and 14 are experiencing reduced service, with some operating on a 60-minute schedule.
The students’ union stated that the service reductions will create additional challenges for students who rely on public transit as their primary means of transportation.
“Longer wait times and less frequent buses may result in students arriving late to classes, missing lectures, or struggling to get to exams and labs on time,” the release said.
MUNSU said the changes will also affect students who commute long distances, work part-time jobs, or have family and childcare responsibilities. For students already managing the financial pressures of university life, alternative transportation may not be realistic.
The union also noted that the impact extends beyond students to include faculty, administrative staff, students with families, and other community members who depend on Metrobus to get to work and access essential services.
“Reliable public transit is essential to ensuring that our campus community can meet its academic, professional, and personal responsibilities,” the release said.
The students’ union encouraged Memorial University students, faculty, staff, and community members who rely on Metrobus to sign ATU Local 1462’s petition supporting reliable and accessible public transit.
