A recently obtained access-to-information request reveals that Memorial University spent $745,132 on renovations to its Signal Hill Campus since the opening of the Emera Innovation Exchange in October 2018.
$740,235 was spent on window replacements and $4,897 on office tower conference space renovations.
Other expenses were paid for using the Gardiner Centre’s program revenue and not the Signal Hill operating budget, including $11,779 on a patio, $7,708 on new doors, and $3,498 on a chair rail.
Memorial noted that several construction packages were ongoing after the opening of the Signal Hill Campus, such as the window replacement, and are considered part of the overall building redevelopment. The window replacement occurred in two phases, with the newest project being treated as a separate project, but it was the result of findings in earlier projects.
The Johnson Geo Centre, which has been operated at the Signal Hill Campus since being gifted to Memorial, has spent $959,120.76 from October 2018 to October 2025, including $943,312 on the Oil and Gas Exhibit (externally funded), $1,630.90 on the Oil and Gas Exhibit Refresh, and $14,177.86 on lobby renovations. The total for the Emera and the Geo Centre was $1,727,238.40.
