A recently obtained access-to-information request reveals the number of inmates at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary in St. John’s, Newfoundland, has increased from 130 on February 9, 2004, to 216 on October 16, 2024—a 66 percent increase.
The capacity at HMP is 195, and it has been operating over capacity since July 16, 2024.
