A recently obtained access-to-information request reveals that 18 Memorial University employees were terminated with cause since January 2013. Two employees were terminated in 2014, three in 2015, four in 2016, zero in 2017, zero in 2018, one in 2019, zero in 2020, one in 2021, one in 2022, three in 2013, and three in 2024.
Employee termination reasons for “Dismissal – with Cause” and “Dismissal – Without Cause” are not tracked in Memorial’s system, so it is not easy to report on “Dismissal – With Cause,” and some individuals may have been missed.
Memorial generated a report for all job terminations with the reasons “Dismissed” and “Terminated,” where an employee was not rehired. A manual review of the personal files was then completed to determine if the termination was “Dismissal – with Cause.”
The report was generated back to January 2013, which is as far back as Memorial can report from the system.
The report intentionally omitted employees and positions, which would require a more detailed and time-consuming review of personnel files to determine the reason for termination. For example, employees with contracts not renewed, non-stipendiary positions, Separately Incorporated Entities (SEIs) or Agency jobs (e.g., C-CORE), student jobs, per-course instructors, and retirees.
