A recently obtained access-to-information request reveals that Memorial University spent $111,043.08 on legal services from Stewart McKelvey from August to October 2023 and $107,765.14 on legal services from McInnes Cooper from January to October 2023. The combined total is $218,808.22.

A large chunk of the fees was paid to Stewart McKelvey for a matter they refer to as “Vexatious Litigant” at $53,239.61. Memorial also spent $27,988.12 on the matter “NAPE v Memorial University.” $2,889.85 was spent on “Human Rights Complaint,” $15,067.34 on “MUNFA Arbitration,” $247.25 on “MUNFA Grievance,” $172.5 on “Annual Internal Audit,” $977.55 on “General Advice,” and $753.83 on “ATIPP Matters.”

The lawyers who worked on the matters include Maureen Ryan, Jayna Green, Stephen Penney, Giles W Ayers, Jennifer L Taylor, Koren A Thomson, Meghan Foley, Josh Merrigan, Matthew R Raske, Olivia Bungay, Kimberley Boland, and Stuart Wallace.

$106.597.07 of the fees paid to McInnes Cooper was involved Dr. Anton Oleynik for “Application for Mandamus,” “Grievance Arbitration,” and “Duty of Fair Representation Complaint.” $2,328.75 was spent on “Office of Faculty Relations – General Advice” and $345 on “Internal Audit Letters.”

The lawyers who worked on the matters include Darren C. Stratton, Karen Holloway, Meghan Felt, Hannah E Loder, John V. O’Dea, and J. David B. Eaton.

Memorial refused to provide the financial records for the legal letters sent to the Office of the Auditor General during the performance audit of the university, stating that the letters were sent by lawyers of Separately Incorporated Entities (SEIs) and are not in the custody or control of Memorial.
