MattBarter.ca previously reported that Rana Abuidris, Memorial University of Newfoundland Students’ Union Executive Director of Campaigns, was facing an unpaid suspension due to allegations of repeated policy breaches, including chronic absenteeism and improper charges on her union credit card.
Executive Director of External Affairs, Communications, and Research Nathan Gillingham has informed MattBarter.ca that, on April 8, 2026, the Board of Directors voted in favour of the reprimand motion, including a four-week unpaid suspension.
Gillingham stated, “The Board’s ruling on the reprimand and four-week unpaid suspension of the Executive Director of Campaigns indicates the violation of specific policies and expectations befitting of an Executive Director.”
He said that the decision followed a review and lengthy discussion of concerns related to “workplace attendance, communication, and compliance with internal financial and operational policies.”
Gillingham said that, as the official representative body of 11,000 undergraduate students, MUNSU’s Board of Directors has “a responsibility to ensure all members adhere to established bylaws and standards, particularly with respect to accountability and the stewardship of student funds.”
He concluded, “The action taken reflects the seriousness with which the Board approaches these responsibilities. Through a fair process, MUNSU is committed to supporting staff and elected representatives in meeting their roles and expectations moving forward.”
