A Memorial University of Newfoundland Students’ Union executive is facing a proposed unpaid suspension amid allegations of repeated policy breaches, including chronic absenteeism and improper personal charges on her union credit card.
Rana Abuidris, MUNSU’s Executive Director of Campaigns, is the subject of a reprimand motion citing multiple violations related to finances and workplace attendance.
According to the motion, Abuidris has been absent for the vast majority of the winter semester, with attendance recorded at under 20 percent. It states that her “repeated and prolonged absences” have significantly disrupted union operations.
The motion also points to an “extreme lack of communication,” alleging that Abuidris failed to provide updates on her absence, including no updates in the group’s Slack channel or responses to direct messages.
It further alleges that she missed important meetings, including the CFS-NL Special General Meeting on February 21, 2026.
It alleges that Abuidris repeatedly failed to submit receipts and expense reports on time and failed to remove personal charges from her union credit card, despite prior commitments to do so.
The motion alleges that there is a recurring personal charge of $12.64 on the card.
It alleges that the Finance and Services Committee rejected her January 2026 expense reports and that the Executive Committee rejected her February report.
The motion states that the union cancelled Abuidris’s union credit card effective March 9, 2026, to prevent further infringements of policies.
It concludes that there has been “no adequate compliance or accountability demonstrated” by Abuidris regarding her expense reports and workplace presence.
The motion states that the lack of documentation for expenses “hampers the reliability of audits and questions our responsible use of student funds.”
If passed, the motion would formally reprimand Abuidris for “repeated failures in consistent workplace attendance and accountability regarding reporting” and suspend her without pay for four weeks.
The motion appeared on the agenda of the Union’s April 1, 2026, Board of Directors meeting but was tabled until the next meeting due to time being taken up by discussions on the cessation of CHMR campus radio.
It was first reported by The Muse on April 1, 2026, during the union’s election, in which Abuidris was running for re-election as an incumbent.
Abuidris responded to The Muse by stating, “I do not believe this motion reflects the full context of my role or the work I have delivered throughout my term.”
She also said that the Director of Campaigns position is “largely external, independent, and structurally unsupported.”
Abuidris said she had formally raised concerns regarding communication, processes, and the lack of structural support within the environment, including additional staff for human resources or harassment-related processes.
She said that her concerns were not “addressed in a meaningful way” and that the motion “focuses on operational gaps without fully accounting for the conditions that created them.”
Despite the allegations, Abuidris ran uncontested and secured a vote of confidence, receiving 450 yes votes and 120 no votes.
