The Grenfell Campus Student Union (GCSU) has condemned Memorial University’s decision to close its Harlow Campus in the United Kingdom, calling it a severe blow to the student experience driven by ongoing financial pressures.
In a statement issued on February 3, 2026, GCSU President Tyson Jesso said the closure represents a major loss for Grenfell Campus students.
“While we understand the difficult position the University is facing, the closure of Harlow is a significant loss to the student experience at Grenfell Campus,” Jesso said. He noted that for decades, Harlow has allowed students to learn in international settings, experience new cultures, and represent Grenfell Campus and Memorial University abroad.
Jesso said that for students from rural Newfoundland and Labrador, Harlow is not merely a campus but a “life-changing experience that opens a student’s academic, cultural, and personal experiences beyond the classroom.”
Jesso said the GCSU remains committed to advocating for students and holding the University accountable for decisions that directly affect them. He added that students deserve consultation and a clear outline of the University’s plan.
GCSU is calling on the provincial government to increase funding to Memorial to prevent cuts from further impacting the student experience and services.
