During a public presentation, Memorial University’s Interim Provost and Vice-President, Jennifer Lokash, shared her views on the university’s Harlow Campus in the United Kingdom when asked a question about reducing the campus complement. She was a shortlisted candidate for the role of Provost on a permanent basis.
Professor Cyr Couturier asked, “If we are to commit to Transforming Our Horizons and the academic mission of MUN, would it not be best to reduce our campus complement and focus on the four main campuses of MUN? I am thinking of Harlow here, leaving it out of the future, why NOT?”
Lokash responded, “I can’t in good conscience stand here and say that I think we shouldn’t seriously consider whether Harlow is a major distraction for the university.”
She explained that she and President Neil Bose disagree on this matter, but her opinion is that that is not where the university should focus its efforts. She emphasized that field schools and experiential learning opportunities for students are critical and that she would love to see that within those other four campuses.
She expressed support for a field school at the Labrador and the Grenfell campuses. She stated, “Why can’t we do more of those types of things where we increase mobility, you know, internally rather than across the pond?”
She concluded, “I just think when we’re really, you know, feeling fiscal constraints as acutely as we are, Harlow’s not where I want to put my energy.”
