Memorial University spent a total of $56,473.4 to defend its discrimination of a hard-of-hearing student. In 2015, William Sears dropped a history class when a professor refused to wear an FM-transmitting microphone.

A previous access-to-information request revealed that Memorial spent $25,990.39 from September 23, 2015, to September 12, 2016. A newly obtained access-to-information request reveals that Memorial spent $30,483.01 from September 13, 2016, to July 2, 2024.

On September 22, 2022, it was published that the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission ruled in Sears’s favour and awarded him $10,000 in damages. At that time, Memorial stated that it was appealing the decision at the Supreme Court to have the decision and fine reversed. Subsequently, former President Vianne Timmons said on VOCM Open Line that the university had settled the matter.
