December 2, 2021: Memorial University student Matt Barter held up a small sign that read “Stop Vianne: No to tuition hikes and out of control spending” and stood off to the side during the President’s speech during a media briefing. He did not speak nor make a sound. The university accused him of harassment, banned him from campus for three months, and then sanctioned him.

May 30, 2024: MUNSU Executive Director of External Affairs Nicolas Keough held up a large sign that read “MUN SUPPORTS ISRAEL’S GENOCIDE IN GAZA” and stood close to President Neil Bose during his speech at a Convocation ceremony. When the President finished his speech, Keough shouted in the President’s face, “Free Palestine!” The administration then sent Keough and MUNSU expectations, including the prohibition of large signs on stage and no disruptions of the ceremony.
