A recently obtained access-to-information request reveals the number of reported accidental overdose and/or poisoning deaths in Newfoundland and Labrador from 2019 to 2023. In 2019, there were 21 deaths, 28 in 2020, 36 in 2021, 37 in 2022, and 51 in 2023.

Accidental overdose refers to the use of a quantity of drug in excess of its intended dose. Drug poisoning acknowledges the toxic drug supply resulted in death without excessive quantity of the substance. For example, drug supply contaminated with fentanyl and its analogues.

The 2023 data available was to the end of November 2023 on closed cases with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). The information is subject to change with outstanding investigations with OCME in 2023.

  1. So to protect the privacy of those who have died over the last 5 years we don’t have access to information of this year to date which could inform us as to whether we are in a dramatic episode or crisis or not
