
According to a recently obtained access-to-information request, Memorial University employees received pay raises totalling $23,872,625 in 2023. It covered 3,818 employees with various types of raises, including general salary increases, minimum wage increases, and step increases. Only one pay raise record was counted per employee.
Memorial stated that the surge in the “Estimated Annual Pay Raise Cost” compared to previous years can be attributed to a significant uptick in the number of raises processed. They provided examples of MUNFA, NAPE, CUPE, and Non-Bargaining.
The pay raise cost in previous years was considerably lower. In 2022, the total was $4,849.859 for 2624 employees. In 2021, it amounted to $10,652,681.78 for 3,561 employees. In 2020, the figure was $3,792,526.73 for 2347 employees. In 2019, it was $3,839,754.15 for 2364 employees. Records of this information are available here and here.
