On September 29, 2026, during a Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly Public Accounts Committee hearing on the Memorial University Facilities Audit Report, President Janet Morrison raised concerns regarding the government’s model of funding Memorial.
“Long-term planning is challenging in an environment where Memorial lives year to year. We don’t have long-term funding commitments,” said Morrison.
“We live fiscal to fiscal, with uncertainty in that space,” she said.
Morrison said she continues to talk to the government about the consequences of this.
She said that “when funding is announced into the fiscal, there are planning challenges associated with that approach.”
Morrison said that while she was pleased with the recent funding outcome, Memorial “can always use more.”
