
A recently obtained access-to-information request reveals statistics for Memorial University’s Development Office from April 1, 2016, to March 31, 2024, including annual staff numbers, annual budget, annual total salary costs, annual domestic travel spending, annual international travel spending, annual spending on entertainment, annual balances on all funds managed by the office, annual new funds raised, and annual loses of funding from donors.
There were 27 employees in 2017, 27.6 in 2018, 29.1 in 2019, 32 in 2020, 35.5 in 2021, 37.2 in 2022, 34.3 in 2023, and 35.2 in 2024.
The annual budget was $2,128,518 in 2017, $2,171,142 in 2018, $1,998,386 in 2019 with $45,059 for strategic initiative funding totalling $2,043,455, $2,510,848 in 2020 with $267,337 for strategic initiative funding totalling $2,778,185, $2,145,000 in 2021 with $451,153 for strategic initiative funding totalling $2,596,153, $2,633,390 in 2022 with $510,521 for strategic initiative funding totalling $3,143,911, $2,609,648 in 2023 with $594,711 for strategic initiative funding totalling $3,204,359, and $2,471,458 in 2024 with $844,003 for strategic funding totalling $3,315,461.
The annual total salary costs was $1,925,405 in 2017, $2,109,675 in 2018, $2,169,090 in 2019 with $44,848 for strategic initiative salary funding totalling $2,213,938, $2,165,568 in 2020 with $266,195 for strategic initiative salary funding totalling $2,431,763, $2,106,730 in 2021 with $356,454 for strategic initiative salary funding totalling $2,463,184, $2,322,007 in 2022 with $477,071 for strategic initiative salary funding totalling $2,799,078, $2,264,784 in 2023 with $528,661 for strategic initiative salary funding totalling $2,793,445, and $2,325,737 in 2024 with $800,214 for strategic initiative salary funding totalling $3,125,951.
$29,666 was spent on domestic travel in 2017, $29,884 in 2018, $39,673 in 2019, $40,348 in 2020, $1,032 in 2021, $3,065 in 2022, $13,522 in 2023, and $19,721 in 2024.
$5,256 was spent on international travel in 2017, $0 in 2018, $0 in 2019, $0 in 2020, $0 in 2021, $0 in 2022, $0 in 2023, and $15,541 in 2024.
The total cost of all travel was $197,708.
$9,271 was spent on entertainment for donor events and $5,353 on hosting in 2017 totalling $12,624, $10,266 on donor events and $2,017 on hosting in 2018 totalling $12,283, $4,876 on donor events and $2,711 on hosting in 2019 totalling $7,587, $12,857 on donor events and $1,661 on hosting in 2020 totalling $14,518, $0 on donor events and $12 on hosting in 2021, $5,210 on donor events and $397 on hosting in 2022 totalling $5,607, $5,188 on donor events and $2,338 on hosting in 2023 totalling $7,526, and $6,840 on donor events and $1,048 on hosting in 2024 totalling $7,888.
The total spent on entertainment was $68,045.
For annual balances on all funds managed by the Development office, it was noted that charitable receipts are offered, and the money is credited to the Faculty, School, or Department designated by the donor, and the Faculty, School, or Department manages the funds. If the donation does not have an immediate designation, then the money is held by the Development Office until a Gift Agreement is completed, and then the funds are transferred to the managing unit.
$1,515,723.68 in new funds for newly established funds/award was raised in 2017 in cash, $924,994 was pledged, and $101,289.82 in stock/property totalling $2,542,008.40, $1,140,892.50 in 2018 in cash, $3,013,656.65 was pledged, and $338,940.78 un stock/property totalling $4,493,489.93, $9,339,557.64 in 2019 in cash, $970,600 pledged, and $150,831.31 in stock/property totalling $10,460,989.01, $2,769,277.18 in cash in 2020, $581,460.33 pledged, and $199,689.87 in stock/property totalling $3,550,427.38, $3,212,028 in cash in 2021, $352,090 pledged, and $98,725.04 in stock/property totalling $3,670,561.95, $3,212,028.23 in cash in 2022, $4,791,315.26 gifted-in-kind, $1,870,103.16 pledged, and $570,707.60 in stock/property totalling $10,444,154.25, $2,414,220.79 in cash in 2023, $15,326.31 gifted-in-kind, $1,661,156 pledged, and $43,394.70 in stock/property totalling $4,134,098.22, $1,144,700.24 in cash in 2024, $74,004.57 gifted-in-kind, $889,033.96 pledged, and $509,774.12 in stock/property totalling $2,617,512.89.

$1,092,496.56 in revenue was lost in 2021 with the loss of 1309 donors, $178,980.87 in 2022 with the loss of 72 donors, $239,862.47 in 2023 with the loss of 324 donors, and $106,044.21 in 2024 with the loss of 420 donors.
It is noted that 2021 includes all terminated pledges/recurring gifts going back to 2017. Terminated vs. completed pledges were not closed out completely in legacy system, and the conversion to a new database necessitated that the terminated pledges/recurring gifts were all identified and written off.
