A recently obtained access-to-information request reveals text messages between Memorial University’s Board of Regents members regarding a meeting between the university’s administration and Pro-Palestine protestors.

The first text message, dated May 26, 2024, stated that the Regent was interested to know the student protestor’s perspective because the update they received from the administration was that the meeting was civil and positive, but social media posts presented a different point of view. The Regent stated that it’s important for the Board to hear all voices on such an important issue.

A text message from another Regent stated, “It is definitely very very misleading what is being said on the gazette…. we walked out early because they were being so insulting, we straight up all said that we were embarrassed as students of MUN like it was really heated.”

Another text message from a Regent stated, “I really hope no matter what happened everybody is able to return to the table and real good faith negotiations.”
