A recently obtained access-to-information request reveals that Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services (NLHS) spent $161,494.00 on out-of-province cardiac care referrals from January 2023 to July 2023. $72,270.07 was spent on airfare, $49,889.00 on accommodations, $34,330.00 on meals, and $5,004.00 on taxis/uber. 23 patients travelled to the Ottawa Heart Institute as part of a MOU.

NLHS does not aggregate and report on costs associated with cardiac care referrals due to complexities. The records are patient-specific and are part of each individual’s personal health record.
