
A recently obtained access-to-information request reveals the “CREATING SAFER ROADS FOR NEWFOUNDLAND” speed camera pilot report by TRAFFICLOGIX.
The City of Mount Pearl and the Town of Paradise were selected for the 90-day pilot project. In Mount Pearl, speed cameras were placed on Michener Ave, Park Ave, and Blackmarsh Road. In Paradise, the speed cameras were on Carlisle Drive, Karwood Drive, and Brougham Drive.
There were 63408 violations in Mount Pearl and 30313 in Paradise. The total number of violations was 93721. 83467 vehicles were verified, and 2817 warning notices of violations were given. 21958 vehicles were caught going above the speed limit by 20 KPH, and 72 were caught going above by 100 KPH.
The key takeaways include:
a. Nearly 23.4% (21958) of all the violations were in excess of + 20 KPH above the posted limit.
b. 0.07% of the vehicles (72) were traveling at speeds in excess of 100 KPH.
c. Over 93,000 vehicles (93721) were exceeding the speed limit in excess of 11 KPH.
d. Over 80,000 vehicles (83467) could have had a violation notice issued. (2817 warning notices were actually issued due to project limitations and municipal staffing levels).
