According to the Graduate Students’ Union Memorial University of Newfoundland’s May 20, 2026, Board of Directors meeting minutes, the GSU owed the Canada Revenue Agency $90,000, and $50,000 was removed from the GSU’s RBC bank account.
RBC also froze the GSU’s account, preventing it from making transactions or receiving opt-in fees.
It is unknown how much money was in the GSU’s bank account.
The executives said they were looking into the reason for the deduction and were unsure where the debt originated.
The CRA account is accessible only to authorized individuals, and the new Executive Director of Finance, Jake Hoare, has not yet been authorized.
The executives suggested a $40,000 loan from the university or an extension from GreenShield for payment.
The executives said they were preparing an information package for the CRA.
