On September 17, 2024, as Memorial University President Neil Bose was speaking at Memorial’s centennial event, launching the countdown to the university’s 100th anniversary, students placed a protest sign behind him stating, “A CENTURY OF COMPLICITY. DON’T CELEBRATE. DEMAND CHANGE.”
The protest sign was then removed by Chief Risk Officer Gregory McDougall.
McDougall took office as Chief Risk Officer in July 2020. Since his hiring, there has been a pattern of inappropriate behavior that has earned McDougall a reputation for disliking student protests and trying to quell dissent. In September 2021, he took issue with posters calling on then-president Vianne Timmons to resign. In December 2021, he filed a complaint against a student for holding up a protest sign while President Timmons was speaking at an event. Then, in December 2022, he made serious threats against students for presenting President Timmons with a large pink slip.
