A recently obtained access-to-information request reveals all correspondence sent/received by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister, Deputy Minister, and Assistant Deputy Ministers regarding St. Clare’s hospital replacement (excluding P3 records) from October 1, 2023, to February 23, 2024.
On February 18, 2024, Minister John Abbott received a text message, “The Anglican Diocese of Eastern NL has 31 acres on Major’s Path. May be worth a look.”
Abbott pointed out to Department officials that it is land in the North section of the City of St. John’s that may be used for future provincial infrastructure.
Assistant Deputy Minister Greg Clarke stated, “If it’s close to the airport, there could be a limit to how many storeys can be built on the site. As for the size, without know the actual lay of the land, 31 acres is likely big enough for the hospital but I’ve asked our team to verify this.”
After visiting the lands register to identify the 31 acre parcel, Clarke made the following observations, “The land has an irregular shape which may, along with the proximity to an airport runway, could be a challenge for facility development. In turn, access to the parcel is somewhat constrained by the ORR and private land on the southwest side.”
