
According to a recently obtained access-to-information request, Memorial University paid $1,663,960 in bonuses to 802 employees in 2023.
Examples of bonus types provided by Memorial include special payments to Clinical Faculty and signing bonuses given as the result of bargaining agreements (e.g., signing bonuses), career awards (e.g., Canada Research Awards), Northern Allowance, and other awards (e.g., Presidents Awards, Deans Awards). Only one bonus record was counted per employee.
Memorial noted that some of the bonuses reported in the “Total Annual Bonuses” may have been funded externally but processed through Memorial’s payroll system.
The bonuses paid out and the number of employees who received them in previous years was lower. In 2022, 683 employees received bonuses totalling $1,380,427. In 2021, 40 employees received bonuses amounting to $309,766.66. In 2020, 62 employees got bonuses totalling $368,858.34. In 2019, 56 employees received bonuses amounting to $392,421.56.
